Urban Agriculture Across Latitudes! A walk from the Green Park Farmers’ Market to Bath City Farm with Dr Georges Félix

Georges at Bath’s Saturday farmers’ market on 19th November 2022

Why should you walk from your city’s well-known farmers’ market to an urban farm on a chilly but thankfully Saturday morning? It is not every day that we meet an agroecologist able to decode the edible and other plant world around us. On this walk, Georges Félix first taught us how to look for fresh food and distinguish it from processed, and how to make the difference from locally grown and shipped from far away. He then walked with us along the river and we looked at the former Homebase car park slowly being taken over by small islands of plants emerging from the cracks of concrete. On the river bank, he talked us about different fuctions, explaining how coloniser plants prepare the ground for new plants, providing them with biomass. He showed how we can guess the past from the presence of plants like bramble or nettle, and how we can forage for edibles such as rosehip, berries or dandelion. By the time we reached Bath City Farm, the weather warmed up sufficiently to enjoy a coffee outside while looking at lively goats and beautiful chickens. The walk opened many conversations about organic vs. non-organic farming, home-grown vs. shppied from elsewhere, ways of composting at home and on university campuses. We hope to continue the conversations with more people next time!
